Ash Wednesday 2008 was a special day for St Michael's Full Primary School, Ekwendeni, which is situated just 15 km north of
Mzuzu, as this is the day that the Education Commission of Mzuzu Diocese, on behalf of Louth County Council of Ireland,
presented a cheque for over one million Malawi Kwacha in order to help St Michael's build a school block of two classrooms.
The following pictures tell the story.

On Wednesday 6 February 2008 a ceremony was held at St Michael’s Primary School at Ekwendeni to mark the handing over
of a cheque for 5,000 Euro, approximately MK1,024,000 for the construction of a new school block of two classrooms at the
school.
The ceremony was a major event for the school community with one Sub Chief, three Group Village Headmen and seven
Village Headmen attending the ceremony as official guests, along with four Parish Education Committee members from the St
Augustine Parish, Mr. G B C Gondwe, the Primary School Education Advisor/Coordinator, Mr. J Longwe, Education Secretary
for the Mzuzu Diocese and Mr. Jim Sachs, the Diocesan Education Commission Capacity Building Officer.
The official guests were welcomed by the Head Teacher Mrs. Mutumbuka, the Deputy Head Teacher and members of the
Parent Teacher Association.
In attendance were all the teachers and students of the school and many parents and supportive parish community members.
The children presented a short play that illustrated the educational issues being addressed at the school and a traditional
dance to celebrate the great achievement of receiving this money and now being able to proceed with the building construction.
Students of all ages, along with their teachers, then joined in traditional dancing and singing to celebrate the occasion and to
proclaim their appreciation for the gift received.
After the introduction of guests, speeches of thanks were given to the applause of the children and community members
present.
The celebrations were concluded by Fr Ryan celebrating the Mass of Ash Wednesday in the St Michael’s church.
The following photos were taken on Easter Sunday 2008.
