Management of Ungweru
The Initial Set-Up of Ungweru:
The initial set-up of Ungweru in 2005 was financed by
approximately Euro 3,500 from the Fitzpatrick Family and
their friends, Euro 1,500 from the Dunne Family and their
friends, Euro 2,500 from Katie O'Brien (a visiting Lecturer
at Mzuzu University) which was used to buy furniture, Euro
3,000 from Brendan O'Carrol which was used to buy three
computers and two un-interrupted power suplies, Gill
Hunter gave a computer and finally nephews and nieces of
Fr J Ryan namely Orla and CarolAnne Dunne, Pierry Ryan
and their friend Lorraine Barry contributed some laptop
computers.
The Second Phase of Ungweru:
Ungweru proved to be a very popular place for youth and it
quickly became apparent that the initial building was too
small. In October and November 2006 Ungweru
underwent an expansion program which added four new
structures, namely
- A large circular gazebo which is used as the newspaper /
magazine reading room
- A large rectangular boardroom which also doubles as a
study room
- A small round gazebo which serves as an office for the
Coordinator and reception area for new-comers to Ungweru
- A small round gazebo which serves as a 'Childrens Corner'
All these structures are of timber construction with
traditional grass roofs. As a result of having these new
structures the original building is now freed up for
- computer training and related activities and
- the new library
This expansion program cost approximately Euro 2,130
and was financed by Fr J A Ryan with a contribution of Euro
500 from Dunnes and friends. The large collection of new
books in the library was donated by Jon and Marissa
Saints and their friends from the USA.
The Third Phase of Ungweru
In August 2007, during a visit from the Fitzpatrick family, a
meeting of various stakeholders was held at Nkhata Bay
(this meeting included the Board Chair A.A. Nyirenda, the
Director P. Chilambo, one Administrative Assistant Mrs R
Botha, three Trustees Patrick and Johanna Fitzpatrick and
J. A. Ryan, two volunteers from Ireland Nora Delaney and
Paula Keenan and two students representing the
beneficaries Samuel Banda and Cecelia Ngwira). At this
meeting it was decided to
- Set up a Board of Trustees and transfer ownership
of Ungweru to this Board. J.A. Ryan is to act as
Chair of this Board and provide the link with the
Board of Directors.
- To register Ungweru as a Community Based
Organisation (CBO).
- Set up a local Youth Committee which is to be
given the responsibility of facilitating the possible
comming of youth volunteers from Ireland.
- To give Ungweru the task of facilitating and
monitoring a link between St Augustine's Primary
School and a Primary School from Cork.
- To install Internet at Ungweru
- To begin to audit accounts on a yearly basis using
an external auditor.
