Services offered at Ungweru

The following services are offered at Ungweru:

A Conducive Environment for Reading
Ungweru makes available the main Malawian National Daily Newspapers, the main
Malawian Magazines and a small library of books.
Reading of newspapers and magazines at Ungweru is free of charge.

Internet Access
Ungweru provides affordable internet access at MK3 per minute.  The rates in
Mzuzu City for Internet access range from MK10 to MK30 per minute.

Comfortable Boardroom Facilities
Ungweru facilities meetings of the local community by providing a comfortable
boardroom, capable of sitting 16 people, with soft drinks and snacks for sale.
These facilities are free to the local community. However Ungweru charges a fee
(MK1,500 per day) to NGOs and other organisations who wish to avail of these
facilities.  Any group wishing to hold a meeting at Ungweru should contact the
Director.

A Study Room
When the Boardroom is not being used for a meeting, Ungweru allows the youth to
use it as a study hall free of charge.

Lusekelo School of Computing
Ungweru incorporates “Lusekero School of Computing", which provides training in
IT skills as follows:

  1. Typing (MK500 per month)
  2. MS Windows (MK600 per month)
  3. MS Word (MK800 per month)
  4. MS XL (MK800 per month)
  5. MS Access (MK800 per month)

Unfortunately, at this time Lusekelo cannot offer any examinations or accessment.
Lusekelo merely offers the local community the oportunity to practice their
computing skills. Self Learning Tutorials are installed on the computers which
facilate easy learning. These tutorials guide the student through vaious lessons in
the various topics: Typing, MS Windows, MSWord, MS XL and MS Access. These
tutorials allow the student to proceed at his or her own pace. Having completed the
full set of Tutorials the student should be ready to sit any of the basic level
examinations in Typing, MS word or MS XL. Lusekelo emphasises that it is unable
to offer any of these examinations. A student who wishes to sit any examination will
have to register with a school who is authorised to administer these exams. A
qualified Secretary is available to help the student 'get going' with any of the
TUTORIALS and answer any queries the student may have.
Both Lusekelo and Ungweru STRONGLY RECOMMEND that a student is proficient
in typing before taking any of the other courses. Also a student should take the MS
Windows Tutorial before taking any of the other MS Tutorials.

HIV / AIDS Issues:
One of the reasons for the establishment of Ungweru was to facilitate the transfer of
funds from friends and well wishers.  All funds will go directly to HIV / AIDS groups
or other helping groups in the Luwinga Area.  Ungweru will be responsible for
accounting for all funds which pass through its Bank Account.  Ungweru believes in
open and transparent accounting and will strive at all times to uphold good practice
in this area.
