Volunteering at Ungweru
Nora (in red) and Paula (busy cutting)
volunteering in July and August of 2007
Ungweru believes in the interaction of cultures and is very willing to facilitate youth
visits (or adult visits!) from Small Change in Cork, Ireland to Mzuzu.  Ungweru does this
with the conviction that, with such visits, everyone gains.   Please note that Ungweru is
not able to give any financial support as most of Ungweru's funds come from Small
Change and all funds from Small Change (and others) are directed to the poorest of the
poor in and around Mzuzu.  We guarantee all our donors that all monies sent to Ungweru
will be used to mitigate suffering and hardships due to poverty and HIV/AIDS as well as
providing various services to youth at Ungweru.

We ask all those volunteering with Ungweru to come with a spirit of self support which
will allow Ungweru to continue to plough all of its resources into the poor.  But we do
guarantee that any person will be greatly enriched by the experience of volunteering
with Ungweru (unless one is completely closed to learning!).  As a guide to what
resources a volunteer should come with, we give the following (everything is estimated
according to two or three volunteers):
  • Return air fare (of course!) including vaccinations (if required), insurance etc
  • Euro 50 per person for taxi from airport to Mzuzu (Taxi send from Mzuzu to airport at special rate)
  • Accomodation: There are a few options:
  1. Luwinga Lodge:  First Class Delux Accomodation (self-contained rooms with carpet and TV) at Euro 20 per
person sharing per day, including all meals, a quiet place, nice sitting room, kitchenette etc
  2. TIKU Lodge:  Good accomodation, right across from Mzuzu University gates, at Euro 10 per person sharing
per day including all meals .  Need to book well in advance.
  3. Ungweru, if given  at least three months notice, could try to rent a house (three or four bedroomed) for larger
groups.  There is no guarantee that such a house would be found!  But Ungweru would try.  This might suit
larger groups who might like to share a house and cook for themselves etc.  Quality would very much depend
on what is found but expect this option to be cheaper but more basic living
  4. John Ryan, from time to time, might be able to offer accommodation at his house for two boys or two girls or a
married couple for a period of three or four weeks.  In this case John would personally look after all
accommodation expenses but a stake, or fish or a loaf of bread now and again would be welcome!
  • Euro 50 per person for taxi back to airpport
  • Pocket money:  Difficult for Ungweru to estimate needs of youth from
    Ireland!

We do not want to seem to be giving very strict rules or regulations but among other issues for or expectations of volunteers
would include:
  1. Volunteers will be asked not to use minibuses for long journeys, but rather large coaches or taxi.  Minibuses are ok for
city travel but extremely dangerous on the long haul
  2. Volunteers will be asked to respect the local culture especially with regard to dress and sharing accommodation.
Malawians dress modestly and un-married people of the opposite sex would not share a bedroom
  3. Ungweru is very closely associated with church and a volunteer would be expected to appreciate the positive role that
the church plays in a developing world
"We guarantee
that any
volunteer will be
greatly enriched
by coming to
Ungweru ...."
