Below is the new Computer Set and Canon Laser Jet Multi-functional Centre
(Printer, Fax, Scanner and Photocopier which were bought with help from
Louth.  In the photo is Mr Joseph Longwe, Education Secretary, Mrs Chiumya,
Secretary to Mr Longwe and Fr J A Ryan.
Mr Joseph Longwe who was appointed Education Secretary of Mzuzu Diocese in 2005 is expected to promote, coordinate and
animate the multitude of activities which one would expect to find as part of Primary, Secondary and Tertiary education.  He is
expected to oversee all this work in all of the 299 schools of Mzuzu Diocese.  He is helped of course by the priest staff of the 15
parishes of Mzuzu Diocese.   Mr J. Longwe has an office at the Central Diocesan Offices with literally two desks and six chairs
and a little stationary.  The Diocese also provides him with transport for him to be able to visit schools and parishes.  But his
office has no computer, no printer and no photocopier.  These items are essential for him to carry out his work.

On his return from Ireland in Sept 2006, Fr J Ryan presented the cheque for Euro 6,000 to Mr J. Longwe who expressed his great
gratitude to Louth Co.Co.  The cheque was lodged in the account of 'Mzuzu Diocese Schools Account' at the National Bank of
Malawi.  Half of this cheque will equip Mr J Longwe's Office with the above IT equipment and the other half will go to St
Augustine's Primary.

At the present time, 4th October 2006, Mr Longwe is getting quotations for these items to see where best we can buy them.
Since Mzuzu is an isolated place this is a bigger task than one might think.  Later this month we will be having a meeting to
discuss the various quotations.

5th November Update
Mr Longwe is down with malaria so we did not decide yet where to get the IT equipment.  Also we are exploring getting all
equipment through a new South African store recently opened in Blantyre.  There is a big variation in prices and we want to get
the best deal.
27th January 2007 Update.
A laser jet multifunctional center has just been purchased and will soon be
installed.

For the past two months the Education Office was very busy preparing a
three day workshop for over 30 Priests in Mzuzu Diocese along with other
Education Stakeholders.  The workshop was a milestone in the diocese
for the renewal of Education etc.  The computer set bought by Louth
monies was extremely helpful and very much appreciated.

15th December 2006.
Computer Set finally bought!
It might seem strange to some that it has taken over two months to actually buy a computer set!  This is
the nature of things at this side of the world.  We could have done it faster if we made expensive long
journeys but we decided to be patient.  We are now satisfied that we have got the best price with a
guarantee of back-up service.  The Computer Set includes an 'Uninterrupted Power Supply' (UPS) to
protect the Computer.  We had 'almost bought' a laserjet printer and a photocopier but decided to wait
at the last moment as we were getting conflicting pieces of advice.

We expect to get the printer and heavy duty photocopier soon.
