Better to Give than to Receive
The current Situation and the way forward
|
St. Patrick’s Seminary was established on 18th
January 1952 as a primary school by the
Diocese of Mzuzu with the financial assistance
from the Vatican, Rome. It was upgraded to a
status of a secondary school in 1972.
St. Patrick’s Seminary is fully owned and
controlled by the Bishop of Mzuzu Diocese and
a College of Consultants (an equivalent of Board
of Governors) who assist in the seminary
administration. The seminary has employed 7
graduate teachers and 10 support staff. It has
an enrolment of 126 students for this year 2005.
For a long time the seminary has solely
depended on grants from outside donors and
students’ fees to run its budget of close to
8 million Malawi Kwacha per year. The income
base is far smaller than the expenditure base.
This has led to massive bank overdrafts and
accrual of outstanding payments for services
already rendered to the seminary. In a bid to
support itself, the seminary has embarked on
the following projects:
The only one in Rumphi Town, offers the
following courses: Microsoft Word, Excel
(Lotus 1-2-3), book-keeping, power point
presentation, English for Business
Communication and Typing.
The centre has full time students drawn
from various parts of the northern part of
the country; they are either staying in the
centre’s hostel or renting in town. Part
time students are Form I to IV students of
the seminary and Christ The King
Formation House – in other words
seminarians. The centre is not providing
any monetary gains to the seminary
except that we have our students trained
there.
Due to shortage of meat in Rumphi Town,
St. Patrick’s Seminary decided to address
the problem by establishing a piggery to
improve the supply of meat in the town.
The project is so far both a source of
employment to the people contracted as
well as a source of meat to the seminary.
The farm consists of 10 hectares of land.
Maize is grown on the 8 hectares and
cassava on the remaining 2 hectares.
Proceeds from the farm are a source of
income generation as well as feeding the
students.
