Background
The St Augustine’s Catholic Parish proposed a project in 2007 to build a Multipurpose Hall which will
provide the Parish and the surrounding communities space for various activities. The idea was supported
by Father John A. Ryan, a Kiltegan Priest, who went ahead in identifying the donors in Ireland to support the
Project. The Voluntary Project Committee was elected and the names were presented to Father John Ryan
who also gave Ungweru (a Charity in Mzuzu) a task to monitor the project and the funds passing through its
Bank Account. It was agreed at the first meeting that the project be implemented in phases as follows:
- Phase 1. Foundation and Slab phase
- Phase 2. Supper Structure
- Phase 3. Roofing
- Phase 4. Wiring, plumbing, plastering, flooring, fixing doors and drains
- Phase 5. Painting and fixing glasses in the windows etc
Community Contribution
As a community driven project, communities surrounding the St Augustine’s Parish contributed the
following towards the project:
- Sand valued at MK108,000.
- Bricks valued at MK567,000.00
- Quarry stones valued at MK792,000.00
- Unskilled labour valued at MK214,800.00
Total community contribution being K1, 681,800.00
The communities showed commitment in providing all the above project materials and this has so far
made the work easier to the Voluntary Project Committee.
Achievements
Phase 1.
In November, 2008 and March 2009 the amount of K2, 773, 429.00 was donated for the first phase and its
report of expenditure is at Expenditure Report for Phase 1.

report is at Expenditure Report for Phase 2. This phase 2 was completed in September, 2009. The picture
above shows the completion of this phase.
Present Challenge
The project has now stopped because there is only Euro 1,000 available for Phase 3 against a projected
budget of Euro 13,000.
Way forward
Management of Ungweru together with its Chair of Trustees, Fr. John A. Ryan, are making an appeal for aid
to complete Phase 3 of this project. Phase 3 is budgeted at MK 2,544,478 (approx Euro 13,000). We have
Euro 1,000 so to complete Phase 3 we need approx Euro 12,000
Full details of Phase 3 projected budget can be found at Budget for Phase 3.
