Pigs Pass On Project

The Pigs Pass On program has been a sustainable project at Ungweru, where we empower communities by providing a method of generating income for vulnerable groups.  This income generating activity has helped alleviate the situation of HIV/AIDS support groups, as well as provide better education and nutrition to our community based community centers (CBCCs).  By providing initial investment of piglets, they grow and multiply which can then be sold for money or further bred to generate additional income.

One of our many success stories is Thandazga’s widows group.  In 2009, Thandazga’s widows group has been provided with two pigs after realizing a gap in providing for themselves and the CBCC.   Ungweru’s contribution of two piglets (MK 9,000) and cement (MK 3,000 per bag) along with the community contributions of sand, bricks, timber and labour, there are currently fourteen piglets.  This figure excludes the piglets that were sold in order to provide for the group and the children at the CBCCs.  The funds from the pigs have improved the livelihood of the community by providing caregivers with an income, food for the children, and income for the group.  As an organization, we are excited to expand the success to other vulnerable groups.  As of now, we are excited to expand the program to Kang’ona CBO and Viyele Area 1B HIV support group.
