Wall Paintings

Our current efforts are to provide a sustainable teaching supply to caregivers at CBCCs. Given the scarcity of resources in Malawi compounded with the expensive teaching material, purchasing school supplies for all CBCCs is not feasible.  However, through this innovative idea, the paintings are able to serve as a wonderful teaching material for caregivers.  With this, we are looking forward to see how caregivers will implement the paintings into the curriculum.  Currently, we are training the caregivers in best utilizing the wall paintings to ensure maximum effectiveness.

In early November 2011, Ungweru’s five Canadian volunteers took the opportunity to paint the walls at three CBCCs – Chitatata, Thandazga, and Kang’ona.  The walls were painted with ABCs, numbers, months, and other basic knowledge to serve as a long-lasting teaching tool for the childcare centers.  This idea was sparked upon observing the usage of wall paintings at Temwanani, which were painted by Irish volunteers from Ungweru in 2008.  In Temwanani, the paintings served as visual aids for children to better their education.  This act is in line with our aim to provide quality education to preschool children.  It is observed that children who attended CBCCs show greater proficiency compared to their colleagues who have not had the opportunity to do so.   Hence, our mission to improve education at a young age will serve these children well into primary school.
